I have already written an article of various ways to get rid of mice inside your home. The article was entitled, Shriek! Ways to Deal With a Mouse Infestation. You can read that article here. I wanted, however, to explore a bit more on what I think are the best and most affordable mouse traps and what personally worked for me and my household. Then I wanted to find some of the most highly rated products in each category on Amazon.com. In theory, this would give me an article of what worked very well in order to get rid of mice from my own personal experiences, combined with the some of the most highly rated products in each category on Amazon.com.
As my previous article mentions, I do not like glue traps for personal reasons. Yes, I have used a glue trap before and it worked the first night it was implemented. However, I have personally vowed not to use them again. If you chose to use them, they do work and work well.
Category Number One – Snap Traps
Snap Traps. Many work extremely well and are very affordable mouse traps to implement. I have had a good amount of success with snap traps over the years. I do believe, however, some snap traps work better than others. I have also found that peanut butter was the most effective bait for the mice that beckon my house (specifically my basement). Other effective baits are cheese, bird seed, nuts and even chocolate for the mice that have more luxurious taste buds. Below are some of the best and most affordable mouse traps available, in my opinion.
d-CON Reusable Covered Mouse Snap Trap
The one mousetrap that personally worked best for me, without doubt, was the d-Con Reusable Ultra Set Covered Mouse Trap. I have personally caught many mice with this trap in my basement. It is very simple to set, and the covered trap also allows for easy release. You can see when the trap has been triggered as you will see the butt and tail of the deceased mouse peering from the outer portion of the trap’s cover. After the trap has caught the pest, simply release and dispose of the mouse and reset the trap. Below links to Amazon.com.

Victor Quick Kill Mouse Trap
Another trap that has had a great success rate for me is the Victor Quick Kill Mouse Trap. This trap, although it is not covered, is very easy to set and catches mice fast with the right placement and bait. With this trap, you never have to touch the deceased mouse, simply lift the handle on the red bar, give it a few shakes over your trash barrel and out comes the remains of the mouse. Next, reset the trap. Your bait most likely will still be in place. Below links to Amazon.com.

Victor Easy Set Mouse Trap
The Victor easy set mouse trap is as traditional as it can get. Victor has been doing it for years and they offer affordable mouse traps that consistently work. This one is also ranked incredibly high on Amazon.com’s user reviews. I remember watching the old cartoon Tom and Jerry when I was younger. It would be on TVs in my neck of the woods shortly after I got home from grade school. Well, this is the same type of trap that was represented in the cartoon. The trap did little to discourage Jerry from running a muck in the household, however, that was a cartoon. In real life, this trap would not be as highly rated as it is without people having a great amount of success with it.
The trap is made of a wood platform and a wire kill mechanism. I also like the traps with a rather large trip pedal, however, this trap is also sold without the yellow pedal. Below links to Amazon.com

Authenzo Mouse Traps
The Authenzo mouse traps make this list for 2 different version of mouse trapping precision. Both version are highly rated by consumers on Amazon.com. The first version below is more along the lines of what many think a traditional mouse trap looks and operates like. It does not have the enclosure that the d-Con covered mouse trap has, however it is easy to set and customers swear by it. The trap contains a nice bait cup that is designed to have the mouse reach for the bait as the trap does its work. Customers also claim that this trap makes releasing the mouse very simple. Below links to Amazon.com.
Authenzo Mouse Trap (Set of 6) – By: Authenzo | Authenzo Mouse Trap (Set of 12) – By: Authenzo |
The second version of the Authenzo mouse trap comes in a jaw style trap. The jaw style trap has actually been hit or miss with me. I have been able to trap mice using a jaw style trap, however, every once in a while I notice the trap has been triggered with no mouse to be found. At one point, I had temporarily lost a trap in my garage, only to find it a couple days later completely moved from where I had set it – no mouse to be found. The Authenzo jaw style trap, however, is so highly rated on Amazon.com that I do want to try it out myself.
The trap is easy to bait and set, and discarding the mice, can be done without actually touching the deceased creature. Below links to Amazon.com

Category Number Two – Bait Stations
Another highly effective means to get rid of mice in your home – whether that be your basement, office, outdoor shed or any living spaces – are bait stations. After purchasing my previous home, and as I cleaned the basement, I found a few bait stations set in the nooks and crannies of the cement ledges of my basement walls They were obviously set there by the previous owners, somehow missed by our home inspector, and an obvious sign of things to come. The bait stations seemed. however, to be put in place by a professional exterminator. That being said, if a professional exterminator who makes his/her living being very efficient with pest control practices thinks enough to use bait stations. Count me in.
I have used bait stations before as well, keeping the tradition alive in the unfinished basement of my previous home, as well as hideaway places such as behind my oven, refrigerator, under the kitchen sink’s cabinet, the attic, and even inside a wall. They are effective.
Mice will not perish in the bait station itself, so you should not anticipate finding any deceased mice there. Instead, a mouse will enter the station, consume a deadly dosage of the bait, exit the station, and most likely proceed back to its nest or outdoors where it will expire. Bait traps are commonly sold in a pellet form. One favorable aspect of using a bait station is that it can work for multiple mice at a time, whereas mouse traps will typically catch a single mouse per time used. On the negative side, the poison used in a bait station can also be harmful to humans and pets, so it is oftentimes not recommended for households with young children or pets.
Below are some bait stations that I have had a great amount of success with. The funny thing about bait stations (not so much funny but unique) is that you will not immediately know the mouse has been destroyed. Unlike the snap traps mentioned above, you will not actually be able to view the deceased mouse laying in the trap. In my kitchen, I used to hear the mouse or a number of mice puttering around late at night. Sooner or later, after placing the bait traps in the vicinity, I no longer heard them.

Exterminators Choice Bait Station
Remember when I mentioned finding bait stations in the basement of my previous home, and how I felt that they were most likely placed there by an exterminator. Well, they looked exactly like these Exterminator Choice bait traps. The color and the look were exact. These bait stations includes a key to keep your bait secure and tamper resistant. The color of the station itself is said to blend in with your outdoor shrubs and grass. Below is a link to Amazon.com.

Category Number Three – Electric Mouse Traps
I have a friend who swears by electric mouse traps. While I believe the standard snap trap has worked very well for my particular mouse problems in the past, I have also used the more expensive alternative with good success. That alternative is the electric mouse trap.
These traps are designed to deliver a quick flash of energy that will effectively eliminate mice. They usually run on batteries and are designed to handle a mouse problem both inconspicuously and effectively. On the down side, electric mouse traps tend to cost a little more than snap traps. However, they do consistently work. There is also the added value where you do not need to constantly check the traps – as the trap continues to work even after a mouse has been eliminated, without the need to ritualistically monitor it.
Below are 3 traps that have great ratings on Amazon.com (links below to Amazon.com).

In Conclusion
If you are looking for affordable mouse traps, the above trapping methods are the best, in my opinion, for a do it yourself approach for exterminating mice. Of course you can hire a professional exterminator to help out with your mouse problems. Exterminators like Orkin and Terminix are commonly used, or you can simply run a quick internet search for “mice exterminator near me” and choose one that best suits your budget and ideas of how to best resolve your problem.
